Coming at you this Friday from rainy and dreary Virginia Beach but not for long…I’m getting out of Dodge for a long weekend! Like most people I love to travel any chance I get whether it be by train, plane, automobile, or boat. Over the years I’ve figured out what essentials I like to keep with me to make the trip a pleasant experience, but of course airport delays are a whole other topic entirely!

This time of year is when the snowbirds like to head south for warmer weather or at least take a little getaway, so read below to learn about my 5 fave travel essentials:

1.Snacks + water – I get anxious when I don’t have good, nutritious snacks on me when I travel! All types of delays can occur and nothing good happens when you’re famished. Avoid the crashes and unhealthy temptations by bringing healthy snickity snacks like these when you’re on the road. And as always, keep drinking that water because being dehydrated can wreak havoc on your body. Just because you’re traveling doesn’t mean you can’t still take good care of yourself!  Just because you’re traveling doesn’t mean you can’t still take good care of yourself!

2.Earplugs – I cannot live without these corded earplugs! They have saved me countless times when I’ve been on planes, in the airport, on long bus trips, and hotel rooms, to name a few. I sleep in these bad boys every night no matter where I am or how loud my environment is because I find that silence helps my mind finally slow down. Earplugs can help you discover peace and quiet no matter where you are. I love how they’re comfortable, they’re corded so if one falls out you can easily find the other one, since they’re brightly colored they won’t get lost in your bag or your sheets, and they’re not waxy! If you’ve ever stayed at my house or I’ve stayed with you, I’ve probably offered you a pair!

3.Scarf – having a scarf when you travel is such a lifesaver because it serves so many purposes. It keeps your neck warm, acts as a blanket, acts as a pillow, or covers you up if you need to appear more modest. I always travel with a scarf or two regardless if I’m going to a warm or cold climate. And for the cherry on top, a scarf helps extend your wardrobe especially if you want to get away with lightly packing just a few basics!

4.Toothbrush + toothpaste – ah doesn’t it feel so good to be minty fresh?! Sure gum and mints are wonderful but when you’ve had a long travel day there seems to be nothing better than freshening up with a good old classic brushing session. After you’ve brushed up you feel clean, refreshed, more confident, and just overall good. You can find great travel sized versions of your favorite toothpastes at drugstores, Target, and Bed, Bath, and Beyond to name a few. So fresh and so clean, clean!

5.Reading + watching material – one of my favorite things about traveling is the chance to devote some solid time to work or reading. I personally don’t tend to watch movies or shows when I travel but I love to pop in my earplugs and open a good book. It’s nice to be with your thoughts when you travel but it’s also a great opportunity to catch up on work or your favorite book/magazine/movie/show, especially if you get delayed. I’ll be doing work and reading “Do The KIND Thing” by Daniel Lubetzky, the founder and CEO of KIND on my flights this weekend!

Getaways can be a wonderfully rewarding and refreshing experience but also frustrating and tiresome, so control what you can by bringing the essentials that will make the experience as pleasant and healthy as it can be!

I’d love to know what your travel essentials are so share away!

Laissez les bons temps roulez et bonne santé,
